And what they may lack in polish (right now), they make up for in enthusiasm. It's hard to fault a crew who are trying their level best to ensure guests have a great vacation. The fitness center is by far the largest we’ve ever seen on a cruise ship. It was also one of the most sparsely populated areas of the ship.

Its towering cliffs and mountainous shoreline are extraordinary. If they look familiar, it's from all the blockbuster movies, including Tropic Thunder and Pirates of the Caribbean, that have been filmed there. Raising a Mai Tai to the glorious Fanta sunset, we toast to a beautiful week, well spent. Finally, Kauai is our home for the last two days of the cruise. Known as the Garden Island, its quieter pace and verdant green interior encourage deep relaxation. My last visit here was almost 20 years ago, when a sulky two-word review in my diary notes - "so boring" - reflected my younger self's need for constant fun and excitement.

Then savor a fresh roast of coffee grown in the ancient lava fields of Kailua Kona the next. And in between, fill your days with endless onboard thrills like RipCord® by iFLY® skydiving simulator, delicious dining options and top-notch entertainment. This cruise makes a two-day port of call with the ship docked at the pier the whole time. Guests will have up to 35 hours to explore Maui, leaving at 5 PM the following day.

Though there’s little time to explore the embarkation/disembarkation port of Honolulu on Oahu, there’s a good amount of time to discover the three other major islands — Maui, Hawaii (Big) Island and Kauai. Actually there are two days each at those islands, which is double what you’d find on other cruises to Hawaii. One more point regarding time and tours, don’t try to be overly ambitious with the tours you choose that are outside of what the cruise ship offers. If your tour runs late, you might risk missing the ship, and getting back to the ship will be at your own expense. A good way to eliminate this risk is to build in a time buffer and/or book your excursions through the cruise company.

Kona is a tender port, meaning the ship will anchor out in the open ocean and you’ll need to board a smaller boat to ferry you to shore. And the third difference, directly related to the second, is cost. You’ll likely pay a much higher per night cruise fare on the Pride of America than other ships that sail to/from Hawaii.
Inside, your private, spacious room is well-appointed with style.
On Oahu, check out the Polynesian Cultural Center, where you can tour six different recreations of traditional villages. Watch a Polynesian dance, play ancient games that have been handed down through the generations, and learn the old ways of fishing without a net. If you happen not to find what you're looking for, you can even post a question of your own. One of the best experiences (on an island full of great places to see) is enjoying a helicopter ride around to see canyons, waterfalls, craters, and the famed Na Pali Coast. The Hollywood Theater shows a variety of entertainment such as movies, bands, or a comedian. We enjoyed having our breakfast outside and enjoying the view.
Fellow Passengers
In addition to the fitness center, water aerobics was offered at the pool. The staff delivers a “Freestyle Daily” to your cabin every night with information for the following day. It was usually four pages in length and full of great information on activities and entertainment. The Pride of America has many stateroom options, from a studio that’s designed for the solo traveler, balcony rooms and for the posh experience, suites. While a limited number of staterooms can accommodate up to eight people, most comfortably accommodate two people.
In that way, it is a bit different than a Caribbean cruise where you mind find shopping, dining, and fun activities just steps from your ship. There is something for everyone to do on the Pride of America. A wide variety of dining options, theaters, a kids' area, pools, shops, bars, an atrium, and a jogging track are available to sample during the cruise.
For the next two days, we're on the Island of Hawaii, known as the Big Island. The first stop, Hilo, is on the wetter side of the island. Sure enough, it's drizzling rain as we tour the botanic gardens, waterfall and King Kamehameha Statue. By the time we reach the calm, inviting waters of the beach park, the sun has come out. More adventurous guests head off to see Volcanoes National Park, the rainforests and bubbling basalt lava rock pools known as the Boiling Pots. Faced with labour shortage challenges as the cruise industry revs back into full gear, several of Pride's restaurants and bars are closed on this voyage.
With so much to do, we'll always have you coming back for more. There are many combinations of activities so depending on the group, a short hike and a helicopter tour may work better. On the second day, tours will not go to Hana or do sunsets because of the time constraints. On the first day, snorkel and sunrise tours will not be available. Another included option is the buffet which is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We usually opted for the buffet for breakfast and there was a good variety of food.

Just head from the buffet toward the back of the ship. After taking a pre-arranged taxi from the hotel to the port, check in was fast and easy. We dropped our suitcases off, registered at the check-in station, and proceeded to board the ship.
These were in the Mardi Gras Theater, a nice multipurpose venue. There are two main dining rooms available; Skyline and Liberty. They are really just two floors of the same venue, each uniquely decorated. While cruise ship rooms are usually not large, the room was big enough for us. Our room steward did a good job keeping things nice. This was a first for us as we usually get an inside room.
The ringleader jumps out of the water to welcome us with a splash, earning an enthusiastic round of applause. The health, safety, and comfort of our guests and crew is our number one priority. We’re enhancing our already robust health & safety measures so you can continue exploring the world with the ultimate Peace of Mind.
However, there is too much to include in just one video or post. We are creating a series of posts and videos to share what we learned and help you plan your adventure. You can join those hula girls under the moonlight if you plan carefully.
